About Cooper & Cary

James Cary and Barry Cooper first met in 1996 when they were both performing in a comedy show in Durham. Now, by mutual agreement, they live approximately 4000 miles apart – James in Somerset, England, and Barry in Port Orange, Florida.

Cooper & Cary Have Words is their podcast: a twice monthly conversation about culture, theology, books and more.

James Cary
is a bit of an odd mix.
He is a writer of situation comedy for BBC TV (eg. Miranda, Bluestone 42) and Radio (Think the Unthinkable, Hut 33) and blogs about the technicalities of the process here.  He has also written a book called Writing That Sitcom available here. In case you’re wondering, his favourite sitcoms of all time are Yes, Prime Minister and Seinfeld. You can find out more about James Cary’s comedy writing for TV and Radio via his agent’s website here.

James Cary is also a Christian, with tendencies towards Calvinism (see? I warned you he was odd). He is also a member of the House of Laity of the General Synod for the Church of England for the Diocese of Bath & Wells. He has a degree in Theology from the University of Durham, preaches at his church from time to time and has no plans to become a vicar. For over a decade, he wrote a column for Third Way magazine.

James is especially interested in the interaction between church, faith, culture and politics. His heroes include GK Chesterton, CS Lewis, William Wilberforce, PG Wodehouse, PJ O’Rourke and David Gower.

He is also painfully aware that he has had to write all of the above about himself and make it look like someone else has written it.

Barry Cooper
is an author, teacher and screenwriter who has a very solid track record of writing about himself in the third person. He enjoys strange electronic music like Kraftwerk, Ulrich Schnauss, and Boards of Canada.

He’s one of the creators of Christianity Explored, a series that has to date been used in 100 countries, and translated into 50 languages. He’s written / co-written / presented some things: Can I Really Trust The Bible, Life Explored, One Life, One QuestionLuther, and the forthcoming Puritan: All of Life to the Glory of God. Some of the best reviews of his career have been for Discipleship Explored (“It arrived in good condition” – An Amazon Customer).

Barry has a degree in English Literature from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and one in Christian Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. He wrote and performed various comedy shows at Oxford, and having trained as an actor at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, co-ran a theatre company for seven years. You may have seen him wearing tights at Shakespeare’s Globe or London’s National Theatre, sometimes even while he was acting.
